Hello Everyone! Welcome to my site! My name is Yekenalem. I’m a Ph.D. student at the University of British Columbia, Canada. I was born and raised in Ethiopia and completed my undergraduate degree from Addis Ababa University. I hold two master’s degrees in Infrastructure Planning and Civil Engineering from the University of Stuttgart and Virginia Tech, respectively.

Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. This is expected to increase in the coming decades and most of the growth will be concentrated in developing countries. Consequently, managing urban areas has become a fundamental development challenge. Cities must plan to accommodate the unprecedented population growth, as well as maintain existing infrastructures.  Furthermore, climate change presents an additional planning challenge.

Coordinated and innovative solutions are required to create sustainable and resilient cities. I started this blog to share my thoughts, and provoke discussion in the areas of infrastructure management, urban resilience, and climate change adaptation. My blogs will focus on solutions and policy directions to effectively manage the future growth of African Cities, particularly Addis Ababa. I hope this blog will contribute to the solution by facilitating discussions and creating awareness.
